昭和25 年（1950 年）、当時の美瑛町長・鴻上覚一氏が数々の苦難の末に掘削に成功、
土中399mから48℃の無色の湯が噴出、
「この湯は地底から湧いたプラチナ（白金）ともいうべき尊いもの」と語ったことから、
”白金温泉”と名付けられました。
美瑛町市街からびえい白金温泉へと向かう道沿いには、
大正15年の十勝岳噴火の際に発生した泥流で流された後に自生した白樺林の並木が約4ｋｍ続いており、
「白樺街道」と呼ばれています。
In 1950, Mr. Kakuichi kougami, then mayor of Biei Town,
succeeded in drilling after many hardships,
and colorless hot water of 48°C (118.4℉) gushed out from 399m (436yd)
under the ground. The hot spring was named “Shirogane Onsen”
(white gold hot spring) after Mr. Kakuichi kougami,
then mayor of Biei Town, who said, “This hot spring is so precious
that it should be called platinum that came from the bottom of the earth.
The road from downtown Biei to Biei Shirogane Onsen is called
Shirakaba Kaido (white birch road) because it is lined with 4 km (4,374yd)-long birch
forests that grew wild after the mudflow from the eruption of Mount Tokachi in 1926.
